Dear Members and Friends,
Life is all about moments. Moments that teach you, move you, shape you, change you, inspire you, and if you’re lucky…make you better. Every moment with Rocky LaFleur was full of depth, wisdom, knowledge, love, but most of all, every moment with Rocky made us all better. Every moment with Rocky taught us something new, something inspiring, and changed us. Every moment with Rocky was full of joy and magic.
On March 12th our world shifted as our beloved Rocky LaFleur lost his sudden fight against Stage IV pancreatic cancer. Rocky was one of a kind. Rocky was a living design icon. A soulful and brilliant human being that lit up every room he walked in, brought so many smiles to people’s faces, and impacted the lives of countless people of all ages, far and near.
For us students, Rocky meant the world to us. Rocky’s greatest passion and love was mentoring and supporting emerging design professionals. His dedication to support the growth and connection for the greater design community for all was unwavering. Rocky used to say it was hard for emerging design professionals to craft a professional future without knowing the possibilities, and he would do everything in his power to show us those possibilities.
Rocky was determined to integrate all students into the fabric of the professional design community. Rocky truly wanted to show all students the world. And that he did. Not only did he open our eyes to the world of possibilities, he also literally showed us the world by taking generations of UCLA Extension design students to Paris year after year. There is nothing like an adventure in Paris with Rocky LaFleur, and our students feel incredibly lucky and thankful to have had the opportunity to learn from Rocky in a place that he considered his home.
Our current ASID UCLA Extension Leadership Board feels incredibly thankful to have been by Rocky’s side this past year as he sat on the board as our Community Advisor, or as Rocky preferred to say, “I sit with the board as the Icon.” His absence is deeply felt but so is his presence. His words of wisdom, advice, mentorship and love is with us every single moment and will be living through us as we all grow.
Our student chapter will miss Rocky deeply, and his impact will truly be felt forever. We are committed to helping uphold Rocky’s incredible legacy and will champion forward carrying on his missions and dreams. Rocky had big plans for all students this year and was very excited about what was ahead.
Our students will honor and cherish Rocky forever. We are all eternally grateful for his mentorship.
